JOSEPH A. SLADE -- alias James Slade, alias Jack Slade. Was a trouble-shooter for Wells, Fargo Stage lines. Part-time lawman, part-time desperado -- hanged by vigilantes on suspicion of murder, March 9, 1864, Virginia City, Montana. His wife wanted him to be buried in Salt Lake City fearful that the vigilantes would do harm to his remains, so she had him placed in a metal coffin, or box, and persevered him in alcohol. He was to be removed from Salt Lake City when things quieted down. and then sent on to his birthplace in Illinois, but here he stayed, the plans never being carried out. Salt Lake City Cemetery.
