OBJECTIVES:D-dimer is a fibrin degradation product, a small protein fragment present in the blood after a blood clot is degraded by fibrinolysis. The determination of D-dimer concentration may help to diagnose thromboembolism. Its plasma value increases in pulmonary embolism, venous thrombosis and disseminated intravascular co¬agulation. While a negative result practically rules out thrombosis, a positive re¬sult can indicate thrombosis but does not rule out other potential causes.
