The possibility of applying low-cost ferrite magnets in a direct-on-line-start permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machine (DOL PMaSynRM) for industrial applications, such as pump or ventilation systems was studied. The main target of this machine topology was to achieve a higher efficiency class compared to a counterpart induction machine (IM). Because of the weak properties of the ferrite magnets the motor had to be optimized for a low magnetic stress starting from the permanent magnets\u27 point of view. The optimization procedure includes finding of a suitable rotor construction with a proper number of barriers, thickness of the barriers and thickness of the ferrite magnets.
