Evaluation of practices and knowledge level about hand hygiene among health care workers in a university hospital

Amaç: El hijyeni sağlık hizmeti sırasında temasla geçen infeksiyonları engelleme yöntemidir ve bu infeksiyonların insidansını azaltır. Bu çalışmamızda hastanemizdeki sağlık çalışanlarında el hijyeni uygulamalarının ve bilgi düzeylerinin ölçülmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmaya 75’i doctor, 75’i de hemşire olmak üzere 150 sağlık çalışanı dahil edilmiştir. Bir anket uygulanarak sağlık çalışanlarının bilgi düzeyleri ve pratik uygulamalrı değerlendirildi. Sonuçlar: Her iki grubun da bilgi düzeyleri yeterli değildi ve karşılaştırıldığında aralarında genellikle bir fark yoktu. Tartışma: Hastanemizde el hijyeni ile ilgili davranışlar eğitimle düzeltilmeli ve hastanemizin fiziksel koşulları iyileştirilmelidir.Objectives: Hand hygiene is recognized as the leading measure to prevent cross-transmission of microorganisms and to reduce the incidence of health careassociated infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the practices and knowledge level about hand hygiene among health care working in our hospital. Methods: In this study, a total of 150 health care workers (HCWs,) doctors (n=75) and nurses (n=75) were included. A questionnaire was administered to the HCWs to assess their knowledge and practices on hand hygiene. Results: It was determinated that the knowledge level and hand washing practices were insufficient and there were no differences between doctors and nurses generally. Conclusion: Educational efforts including hand hygiene behaviours should been increased among HCWs. Furthermore, environmental requirements should been improved in our hospital
