Between the Atlantic and the mediterranean : the circulation of Portuguese Faience in the 17th century in Southern France Seen from the Underwater Site of villefranche-sur-mer (Alpes-maritimes). Yet unknown in the context of French archaeology, Portuguese faience has been recently identified in Provence. In the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer, underwater excavations have revealed several open forms corresponding mainly to bowls, plates and platters. Their study and their confrontation with other comparable sites abroad makes it possible to give indications on dates, on the places of production and on the main Portuguese crockery diffused by sea-routes.
