Community-engaged Planning: Flipping the Script from Manhattan to Mumbai

In the past decade, for the first time in history a majority of the world’s population now lives in an urbanized area. This urbanization trend is predicted to continue as well as is an increase in overall global population. The future holds new economic, environmental, and social challenges for our larger cities, smaller communities, and rural areas alike, and how we plan for their development is vital. Urban and regional planning decisions about such aspects as housing, land use, and transportation systems will impact billions of people and their quality of life. While these and other challenges are well documented in the UN Habitat World Cities Report 2016, so is the call for modern planners to adapt the planning process: “from master plan to community vision.” This presentation discusses ways in which planners are evolving to engage with a much wider range of stakeholders, to better meet the civic needs of a people now and into the future
