Expressive writing (EW) is associated with decreases in stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety among college students. EW is also frequently assigned as an informal writing assignment (e.g., journaling) in academic classes, although little is known about the effects of EW on academic writing. This study investigated whether a 3 day, 20 minute expressive writing intervention could alter the academic/formal writing skills for students with differing levels of writing aptitude as determined by their SAT writing scores.
