From the Very beginning of time, music has had an unusual emotional power, and probably because of this reason, it has always been connected with religion. According to one author, sacred music may be divided historically, as follows: (1) Jewish Music, (2) Music of the Primitive Church, (3) Medieval Church Music, (4) Post-Reformation Music, and (5) Modern Church. Each of these divisions may be subdivided; and, in considering the various types which may be found in each, one may see how the conception of sacred music has changed in accordance with the changing views concerning religion.
