84 No portion of Sierra farther south so silent with reference to running water. Sand in cedars appears to have been blown from Mt Shasta - is very fine & extends around the base for at least 20 miles on NE side. The lava of beds identical with that of Shasta Val [valley] & NE to Van Bremer The fine forests of E side of range on Butte Creek val [valley] are growing on gl [glacial] drift So also those near Sissons & N.ward. The forests on [gl] unmixed lava inferior in size & vigor of trees & in 85 variety. Shasta Val [valley] 3000 alt v [very] fertile wheat apples hay The ride to Sissons delightful Sunset on Mt Shasta rich furred [spongy] purple snow The very shadows had purple on them. Tree shadows on snow crossing the road in bars like logs.
