The ground covered with dwarf palmetto; Arbies ab elegant wandy spikes, leaf grass - like, bulbous? Solidago several species in bloom; Conradia fine plant full bloom, also in March. Between Tomoka and Port Orange wild gray ragged forests of tress palmetto unmixed with other trees showing strikingly with exposed trunks and crowns along river bank and lake and meadow margins and vistas opened by road; bays and promontories; endures fire and thus able to take and hold place of pines. Much of pine here and on to Miami Cuban; long in lves as Australian but lvs weaker, less radiant, spherical, drooping tousled look, but green of sems bright tone of yel. Few long leaf below Ormond; a good many of the little short lved Clansa wh has v small cones wh remain long on tree; many of long leaf and Cuban growing on wet ground with very wide swollen instep; are too resinous for use as lumber, “too fat”. Sideroxylon, Bay, Ficus, Jumbo, Manbo, Eugenia, Pawpaw, Mandrake, etc. Fine trees seen along streams and rich bottoms making, laden with grape vines, v dark forests; only meager spots of sunlight penetrates to the ground; yet easier, more accessible, than chaparral of San Gabriel. [Nov 13]. Began botanizing in vacant lot before breakfast; many fine plants in flower; saw beautiful blue Clintonia, fine thread stem, twining around smilax. Drove thro’ dark forest to Cocoanut Grove 3 ms, tree limbs laden with Lilandsia, both long thread kind and pine apple kind; live oak especially laden on long arms.
