As the ice current becomes shallow the mor[aine] matter is likely bury detached dead masses along the sides, while the advanced lower portion of the snouts buried deep in ter[minal] mor[aine] detritus lasts for hundreds of years, or even until trees grow above them. Such ice, however, as far as I have seen, is always close-grained and clear and sound, looking black in the mass, while all of this is white.
