Glutton Gulo Luscus.Martinae 3 ft nose to tail. Tail 9 in [brown] not [southern] of great basin Yosemite June 6th Oak in full leaf [Black] [Live] in full flr [flower] yellow coloring the tree. The trail to upper fall shaded with [overarching] live oaks glossy leaves [fine] strong gray limbs interlacing. The ferns unrolling birds nesting full flower time. Meadows fresh & [green] not flooded. River full, flowing deep & strong between its leafy banks [pouring] its precious [ ] of crystal life giving water to the thirsty [lowlands]. The falls in fine voice & [dress] calmly [sounding] [their] [glorious] [symphonies] [with] the grand [power] & deliberation so char- 2 acteristic of nature The [crowds] of [pleasure] lookers scarce seen or felt save about the hotel steps. The grandest of all the terrestrial temples that God has [builded]. On board the Dakota outside the heads S.F. [San Francisco] June 20th 1879 It was curious to see how suddenly the eager excited countenances of the passengers were darkened & subdued as soon as the good ship was free in the open sea pitching & rolling like a lumbering whale.
