[July] 25. Arrived at Juneau at 4 this morning. The town quiet, miners all away getting gold or trying to get it, mostly for poor or vicious uses. Wonderful wealth of forest on the steep [mountains]. At 12:30 we are starting for Douglas city for coal. All along the Fairweather range there is an outlying mass of moraine material, much of it stratified, almost continuous, more or less tree-clad, enclosing lagoons.
