[Sketch: Front 1 [mile] wide, 1st [East] of [Yakutat] [glacier] 5 miles from it; Front 1-1/2 [miles]. 2d [East] of [Yakutatu] [Glacier] 2 [miles] from 1st] tide and bergs fall on the beach. None that I saw reached the sea. Not a berg [Yakutat] and [Glacier] Bay, 4 in Lituya [Bay] thundering off bergs, but saw none outside nor any outside of [Prince] [William] [Sound] or even of the inlets. But as we entered Cross Sound I saw a berg sailing into the open ocean and all the way along the sound and Icy Strait they were sprinkled, all of course from [Glacier] Bay. This bay yields more ice than all those to [Westward] put together, perhaps more than these of all the coast beside. Just as we entered Cross Sound [clouds] or fog or mist began to fall, and after this glorious show the trip seemed done, and everybody exhilarated by the icy glorious day began to loosen the tension of nerves by shouting, joking, cutting up generally. We all felt more free and friendly, reserve went to the winds. After dinner, tho’ nothing stronger than Apollinaris was served, college yells, rival yells and lusty jostling.
