54 only mtn [mountain] lake of any kind I have yet discovered in these many ranges – the best preserved mors [moraines] are extended from mouth of beaut [beautiful] valley on the N side of the mtn [mountain] & curved around westward a well formed terminal mor [moraine] curves around between the two [lakes] at height of about 8500. Height of laterals about 200 ft at head. length about 2 miles. Another pair of lats [laterals] extend NW from height of 7500 ft nearly to the level of smoky val [valley] 5500 ft. 4 cans [canyons] on the N & NE are nearly equal in gl [glacier] interest. W.] Glacial trends on Mt Jefferson 55 The effects of shadows in directing & controlling the pressure of the glacial action delightfully appears in the sculpture of all this magnificent old [ ] mtn [mountain] – Strange to say on the same range immediately N of this mtn [mountain] & adjacent the range presents no plain trace – scarce a hint of gl [glacial] action but on the contrary every feature in the complicated topography seems to be strictly due to atmospheric erosion. It is sun beaten & at least during the last gl [glacial] period seems to have been wholly free from ice.
