An analysis of the role of dental hygiene schools are assuming to prepare dental hygiene students in a community health setting

Thirty-four dental hygiene schools in United States offering a baccalaureate degree in dental hygiene were surveyed to assess the extent to which extramural activities are part of the dental hygiene curriculum. A questionnaire was designed to determine the scope and sequence of extramural programs,the percentage of schools that have implemented extramura| programs into their curriculum, the duration of time a student spends at extramural activities, the types of skills performed by the dental hygiene student, and if the student is prepared by the dental hygiene school to function in a community setting. The findings indicate the schools nearly unanimously take an active part in exposing students to a variety of health settings and target populations.Since the review of the literature indicated little statistical data relating to extra-mural experiences of dental hygiene programs,the data was viewed as baseline data from which future research could be undertaken
