Findings from a special stroke supplement to the 1977 National Health Interview Survey questionnaire are presented in this report from the National Center for Health Statistics. The supplement was developed in response to a request from officials at the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health. Their particular data needs centered around three major areas: (1) estimating the number of adults among the noninstitutionalized population who have survived a stroke, (2) gaining information on the relationship between selected chronic conditions and a history of stroke, and (3) describing the characteristics of persons who have had symptoms associated with stroke.
