International audienceThis paper aims at analyzing the connection between liturgy and the issue of totalitarianism in the doctoral thesis by Joseph Ratzinger, the future roman-catholic Pope Benedict XVI : « People and house of God in Saint Augustine's ecclesiological teaching ». We try to explain how the young Ratzinger starts from a purely theological issue (what is church?) to go toward analyses with a genuine political and theological aspect. Those analyses are closely interconnected with issue raised in the German Catholicism in the 30s.
