Stratégies d’insertion spatiale et socio-culturelle des étudiants africains en France : Cas de Poitiers

International audienceOf the 323,933 foreign students enrolled in metropolitan France in 2017, the African student community is almost the majority (142,608). Today, despite the fact that some politicians and media are increasingly hostile to the presence of African students in France, they are still able to integrate into French society by participating in the animation of life university and by getting involved in local development actions. This dynamism of these African students is more concrete and visible in the city of Poitiers where the student / inhabitant ratio is the highest in France. Through the African students of Poitiers, we asked ourselves about the spatial and socio-cultural integration strategies of a community of foreign students in France. Based on a field survey of 200 African students and on the exploitation of statistical data, the study allowed us to show that the arrival in Poitiers of these students is mainly facilitated by the existence of a network of knowledge. "Poitevin", by the plurality of areas and training units as well as the non-increase of registration fees for foreign students at the University of Poitiers. Also, it allowed to observe that their spatial insertion is characterized by a strong concentration in university residences and in personal residences in the municipality of Poitiers. To be able to pay for and pay rent-related expenses, African students enter into student contracts. Finally, they have succeeded their insertions in the society poitevin thanks to the originality of their ways of life which are characterized by their dynamisms, associative engagements and investments in the local life.Sur les 323 933 étudiants étrangers inscrits en France métropolitaine en 2017, la communauté d’étudiants africains en constitue presque la majorité (142 608). Aujourd’hui, malgré que certains milieux politiciens et médias sont de plus en plus hostiles à la présence des étudiants africains en France, ces derniers arrivent tout de même à s’insérer dans la société française en participant notamment à l’animation de la vie universitaire et en s’impliquant dans les actions de développement local. Ce dynamisme de ces étudiants africains est plus concret et visible dans la ville de Poitiers où le rapport étudiants/habitant est le plus élevé de France. Au travers des étudiants africains de Poitiers, nous nous sommes interrogés sur les stratégies d’insertion spatiale et socio-culturelle d’une communauté d’étudiants étrangers en France. Reposant sur une enquête de terrain auprès de 200 étudiants africains et sur l’exploitation de données statistiques, l’étude nous a permis de montrer que l'arrivée à Poitiers de ces étudiants est surtout facilitée par l’existence d’un réseau de connaissance “poitevin’’, par la pluralité des domaines et unités de formation ainsi que la non-augmentation des frais d’inscription des étudiants étrangers à l’Université de Poitiers. Aussi, elle a permis d'observer que leur insertion spatiale se caractérise par une forte concentration en résidences universitaires et en logements personnels dans la commune de Poitiers. Pour pouvoir se prendre en charge et subvenir aux dépenses liées aux loyers, les étudiants africains s’engagent dans des contrats étudiants. Enfin, ils ont réussi leurs insertions dans la société poitevine grâce à l’originalité de leurs modes de vie qui se caractérisent par leurs dynamismes, engagements associatifs et investissements dans la vie locale
