National audienceThis article aims at analyzing the main stages of the geographic diffusion of Buddhism in a specific area spreading from Northern India to the Indian Ocean. Starting from the bottom of the Himalayas in Ancient India, the birthplace of this religion in the VI th century B. C., the author purports to show how it fanned out in all directions until the XII th century, and more particularly how it reached the Indian Ocean, and namely Sri Lanka. The study then follows the geographic expansion of Buddhism in the Eastern part of the Ocean after it had faded out of the sub-continent, which requires an intrusion into the kind of relationship it entertained with Hinduism both inside and outside the sub-continent, a relationship which ...
