La diffusion du bouddhisme dans l'océan Indien

National audienceThis article aims at analyzing the main stages of the geographic diffusion of Buddhism in a specific area spreading from Northern India to the Indian Ocean. Starting from the bottom of the Himalayas in Ancient India, the birthplace of this religion in the VI th century B. C., the author purports to show how it fanned out in all directions until the XII th century, and more particularly how it reached the Indian Ocean, and namely Sri Lanka. The study then follows the geographic expansion of Buddhism in the Eastern part of the Ocean after it had faded out of the sub-continent, which requires an intrusion into the kind of relationship it entertained with Hinduism both inside and outside the sub-continent, a relationship which accounts for its quasi-disappearance from India, its motherland. Another aspect focused on is the contemporary expansion in Western Indian Ocean and more specifically in Reunion Island which, as a meeting-place for East and West, faithfully reflects the general tendency of the Western world in this issue, allowing for an assessment, as a conclusion, of the universal nature of Buddhist expansion.Cet article se propose d'analyser les grandes étapes de la diffusion géogra-phique du bouddhisme dans une aire spécifique : du nord de l'Inde vers l'océan Indien. Partant de la naissance de cette forme religieuse au pied de l'Himalaya, dans l'Inde an-tique, au VIe siècle av. J.-C., il s'agit de montrer comment elle s'est répandue tous azi-muts jusqu'au XIIe siècle et plus particulièrement comment elle a atteint les rivages de l'océan Indien et, en premier lieu, de l'actuel Sri Lanka. Il s'agit ensuite de suivre les diverses étapes de la diffusion du bouddhisme à travers l'océan Indien après sa quasi-extinction dans le sous-continent, ce qui requiert l'examen des rapports qu'entretiennent bouddhisme et hindouisme aussi bien dans le sous-continent qu'en dehors de lui, rapports qui ont présidé à la disparition du bouddhisme de sa terre d'origine. Enfin, à l'époque contemporaine, nous rendrons compte de l'expansion du bouddhisme vers l'ouest india-nocéanique et notamment vers la Réunion qui, en tant que lieu de rencontre de l'Orient et de l'Occident, reflète fidèlement les tendances générales de ce dernier. Nous conclurons notre propos sur les caractéristiques de cette expansion profondément liée à la nature universaliste du bouddhisme
