International audienceChivalry's origins and decline are the subject of a number of historiographical controversies in England over a span of more than a century. This prompts to a much more general question of the relevance of historical periodizations. But these controversies are intimately linked to the problems of the definition of this notion. This paper studies these debates and intends to highlights that the chivalry was not only a military or aristocratic code, not was it an ideology, but that it constitutes, more widely, a cultural phenomenon on the 'longue durée', dynamic and not static.
