International audiencePreface to the publication of the book The Mapuche and the Claim of a Nation, written by Pablo Barnier-Khawam who examines the seemingly paradoxical problematic of the internationalization of a movement and a demand for recognition as a nation within the unitary state of Chile. He tried to explore the problem by shedding light on one angle, specific to the experience of the dictatorship that Chile suffered between 1973 and 1993, and linked to the exile that affected leftist militants and among them the Mapuche. The “indigenous law”, passed in 1993, does not recognize them as "a people" or "a nation" but as "ethnicity", a category highly criticized in South America.
