This article proposes an analytical approach to military coups in Latin America during the decades 1960-1980. Based on a review, balance and rethinking of the existing approaches, it suggests a comparative policy analysis scheme using the Most Similar Systems (SMS) strategy. The analysis includes ten countries and the conditions under which military coups occurred in some and were absent in others.
