In this project we will focus on solving problems in the field of low molecular weight gelators. In this field there is limited understanding of the relationship between the gelating ability (and in extension the mechanistic properties of the gel) and the structure of the gelator molecule. There is need for a model which can predict if a certain molecule-liquid combination will result in gelation. Finally there is the need for cheap highly functional gels, which can be used in high-tech applications. During this project we will develop new methodology allowing the synthesis of gelators for several applications via structural modifications of previously reported gelators.
