Representation and theatricality in staircases designed by Andrés and Alonso de Vandelvira. A formal and analytical study of the Caracol de Emperadores from the standpoint of its singular status in architectural theory

[EN] In the work of Andrés de Vandelvira, and of course in the manuscript treatise by his son Alonso, a number of complex stonecutting problems are worked out, including those involving warped surfaces. Adding complexity and refinement to the field of stereotomic architecture, Vandelvira also incorporated, as a main or secondary feature, cyclic surfaces in order to generate helixes and helicoids. The reasons underpinning the deployment of these geometric shapes lie halfway between utilitarian solutions to specific problems and the search for a heightened plasticity capable of eliciting a more nuanced psychological response in viewers. We dare say that these highly sophisticated constructive elements, which sometimes amount to little more than minor details or accessories within the building, are endowed with a unique mystical character that allows them, as it were, to stand for the entire structure.[ES] En la obra de Vandelvira, y por supuesto en el manuscrito de su hijo, se van declarando una serie de temas entre los que no quedan de lado distintas aplicaciones sobre el empleo de superficies alabeadas. Ampliando el grado de complejidad en este campo, Vandelvira considera además el uso de superficies cíclicas que, bien con un papel protagonista o bien como solución complementaria, terminan generando hélices y helicoides. La explicación del despliegue de estas figuras geométricas queda a medio camino entre las soluciones a problemáticas de carácter utilitario y la búsqueda de una expresividad plástica capaz de suscitar en el usuario respuestas psicológicas más complejas. Podemos decir que estos fragmentos constructivos, en ocasiones identificados como detalles menores o accesorios con respecto al total de la obra, están dotados de un espíritu místico singular con la suficiente capacidad para significar al conjunto.Estepa Rubio, A.; Estepa Rubio, J.
