[EN] In 1996 surprising changes in the optical properties of Rare Earth (RE) thin films (100-200 nm) under metal-hydride reversible transitions were discovered. Later, other materials were discovered displaying optical switching as Mg-RE alloys (second generation) and the MgTransition Metals alloys (third generation).
