A fault is something that changes the behavior of a system such that the system does no longer satisfy its purpose. Defects in sensors, actuators or in the process itself may occur at any time during the normal operation. Faults may produce machinery or human damages. In order to avoid these problems, faults must be detected as quickly as possible to take corrective actions. These actions should be taken by the control equipment.
