[EN] Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a common form of hereditary retinal degeneration characterized by the loss of retinal photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) and constitutes the largest single cause of blindness in the developed world. It can be associated with other diseases giving rise to a serial of syndromes such as Usher syndrome. It is difficult to understand the pathogenetic mechanisms responsible for apoptosis of photoreceptor cells due to its high genetic heterogeneity.
