Der Glycosylierungs-Mechanismus in Eukayoten wurde in der Vergangenheit intensiv erforscht. Anhand von strukturellen Daten über den Oligosaccharyltransferase Komplex und dessen Zusammensetzung, sowie über biochemische Assays zur Studie der Glycosylierung, wurden zwei verschiedene katalytische Untereinheiten entdeckt. Die STT3A Untereinheit wird als co-translational beschrieben, während STT3B post-translational glycosyliert, wenn bestimmte Stellen am Protein von STT3A ausgelassen werden.
