This article presents the results of a post-mortem study of various MgO-C and MgO-C-Al pieces that are used in the electric furnaces at the Acerinox factory in Cádiz. From the chemical, thermal, mineralogical and microstructural characterization of the materials prior to use and post-mortem it has been established that, in both types of refractories, the corrosion has lead to the formation of reaction layers with different chemical and mineralogical composition, as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure, ranging from the hot to the cold face and strongly depending on the zone of the electric furnace where the piece is situated.
