Applying a set of innovative pedagogical approaches to the study of social medicine, the course Beyond the Biologic Basis of Disease: The Social and Economic Causation of Illness aims to train medical students to critically understand the linkages between social and clinical medicine. Through class discussion, field visits, and films, the students and course faculty work to analyze a variety of global health interventions with an analytical framework that classifies interventions into models of charity, development, or social justice.
