This study aims to identify the effects of gender on genre preferences (narrative, recount, descriptive, report and procedure) and reading achievement, and also to analyze the correlation between genre preference and reading achievement. The sample of this study was 30 students of Junior High School 15 Mataram. To gather the data, a closed questionnaire was given to collect students’ genre preferences; reading test was given to get students’ score in reading; and the open questionnaire was given to collect the factors that affect students’ reading interest and achievement.
