Sanitary cords, lazarettos and quarantines: the prophylaxis and the role of the medical body during the cholera epidemic in Concepción (1886-1888)

The objective of this work is to understand the relationship between the fifth cholera epidemic, which occurred in Chile, at the end of December 1886 and the actions of medical professionals, in their efforts to raise awareness of the ideals of hygienism, to the leading groups from the city of Concepción. This can be contextualized in a historical period, where it begins to take shape in our country, a greater efficiency on the part of all the authorities of the State, for the control and prevention of epidemics and diseases. The methodology of work, would begin with the pertinent bibliographical readings; Following with the work of analysis and evaluation of primary sources. The idea of this is to see how the epidemic affected the relationship between doctors, civil authority and subordinate groups. In this way, an exhaustive review of the press, official documentation of both the municipality and the Intendencia de Concepción will be carried out, as well as the consultation of some specialized medical journals, which were published during the period studied.El objetivo de este trabajo, es comprender la relación entre la quinta epidemia de cólera, ocurrida en Chile, a finales de diciembre de 1886 y el accionar de los profesionales médicos, en sus esfuerzos por concientizar los ideales del higienismo, para con los grupos dirigentes de la ciudad de Concepción. Esto se puede contextualizar en un periodo histórico, donde comienza a gestarse en nuestro país, una mayor eficiencia por parte de todas las autoridades del Estado, para con el control y prevención de las epidemias y enfermedades. La metodología de trabajo, comenzaría con las lecturas bibliográficas pertinentes; siguiendo posteriormente con el trabajo de análisis y evaluación de fuentes primarias. La idea de esto, es constatar como la epidemia afectó la relación entre los médicos, la autoridad civil y los grupos subalternos. De esta forma se hará revisión exhaustiva de la prensa, documentación oficial tanto de la municipalidad, como de la Intendencia de Concepción, además de la consulta de algunas revistas médicas especializadas, que fueron publicadas durante el periodo estudiado
