Diversificación morfológica y el poblamiento temprano del noroccidente de Sur América: un estudio de la diversidad craneofacial

A study of the craniofacial diversity among samples from Northwest South America, temporal and spatially scattered, is presented in order to create hypotheses for the early peopling of the region. Several kinds of statistical procedures (R-matrix, matrix correlation analysis and geometric morphometrics) were performed in order to assess the population history and structure at the regional level. The results revealed high morphological diversity and patterns of spatial and temporal structuring, additionally, they suggest that distinct population events and the action of evolutionary factors highly affected the craniofacial diversity over time. On the basis of different kinds of evidences, a model on the mode and tempo of the early peopling of the region and the subsequent population evolution throughout the Holocene is presented., craniofacial morphology, geometric morphometrics, Northwest South America. Se presenta un estudio de la variación craneofacial en muestras del noroccidente de Suramérica, distribuidas ampliamente en un sentido espacial y temporal, con el objetivo de proponer hipótesis sobre el poblamiento inicial. Se llevaron a cabo diferentes análisis (matriz-R, correlación de matrices y morfometría geométrica) para estudiar la historia y la estructura poblacional a nivel regional. Los resultados sugieren una alta diversidad morfológica, así como la existencia de patrones de estructuración espacial y temporal; también indican que ciertos eventos poblacionales y la acción de fuerzas evolutivas afectaron notablemente la diversidad craneofacial a través del tiempo. A partir de la comparación de distintos tipos de evidencia se propone un modelo sobre la forma y el tiempo del poblamiento temprano de la región y la subsecuente evolución poblacional a lo largo del Holoceno
