Palacios, ciudades y otros objetos de la diversión. Una mirada retroactiva sobre lo indeterminado y lo inacabado en Arquitectura

Artifacts, gadgets, devices, assemblies and other constructions of seemingly indeterminate or unfinished aesthetics increasingly populate the contemporary architectural scene. These are fed, in many occasions, from an imaginary not particularly architectural by means of the re-appropriation of objects coming from the industrial, agricultural world, etc. as a means to figure out a new life more just, inclusive, politically aware, critical and, above all, through which humans - and not humans - can express themselves subjectively. This article looks back, precisely, at one of the moments when the relationship between this "new" aesthetics and ethics is being built. As case studies we will take Cedric Price’s Fun Palace and Peter Cook’s Plug-In City. Both can be considered works that move away from the architectural standards and conventions of their moment to formalize a new and necessary approach to the architectural fact, understood as an enabler of uncertain and unpredictable situations; that is, life itself. Yet, what is the architecture behind these proposals? Do their drawings present the description of a problem or the principle of its solution? Do those figurative objects simply restitute some aspect of reality or do they really propose the guidelines for their transformation? All these are questions of extreme validity and, therefore, relevance now. The article, however, does not strive for an explicit answer but rather providing the reader with a certain historical perspective to better understand the present moment.Artefactos, “cacharros”, dispositivos, ensamblajes y otras construcciones de estética aparentemente indeterminada o inacabada pueblan cada vez más la escena arquitectónica contemporánea. Éstos se alimentan, en muchas ocasiones, de un imaginario no propiamente arquitectónico mediante la reapropiación de objetos provenientes del mundo industrial, agrícola, etc. como medio para figurar una nueva vida más justa, inclusiva, concienciada políticamente, crítica y, sobre todo, a través de la cual humanos –y no humanos- puedan expresarse subjetivamente. Este artículo plantea, precisamente, una reflexión abierta sobre la relación entre esta “nueva” estética y esta nueva ética revisitando sus antecedentes ideológicos encarnados en el trabajo de Cedric Price y Peter Cook. Tanto el Fun Palacecomo la Plug-In Citypueden considerarse trabajos que se alejan de los estándares y convenciones arquitectónicas del momento para formalizar una nueva y necesaria aproximación al hecho arquitectónico, entendido éste como un posibilitador de situaciones inciertas e imprevisibles; esto es, la vida en sí misma. Ahora bien, ¿cuál es la arquitectura que está detrás de estas propuestas? ¿Sus dibujos presentan la descripción de un problema o el principio de su solución? ¿Esos objetos figurados simplemente restituyen algún aspecto de la realidad o verdaderamente proponen las pautas para su transformación? Todas estas son preguntas de extrema vigencia y, por tanto, pertinencia. El artículo, así, y a través del estudio de la peculiar relación entre Price y Cook, se plantea indagar en todas estas cuestiones pasadas con el objetivo claro de arrojar algo de luz crítica al momento presente.
