For more than a decade, the debate around student achievement has been limited by the narrow parameters of No Child Left Behind, almost completely shutting out any real discussion about the deep economic inequalities that hold back millions of students across the country. Despite district and school leaders’ best efforts, students of color, low-income students, English learners, students with disabilities, and those who are homeless or in foster care are more likely to fail math and reading and are less likely to graduate.
