Les violences chrétiennes contre les synagogues dans l’Empire romain, pendant le conflit entre Théodose et l’usurpateur Maxime (386-388 apr. J.-C.)

International audienceIn 388, the destruction of the synagogue located in the Roman fortress of Callinicon, an Osrhoene's city situated on the left bank of the Euphrates, was not an isolated fact. At the same time, another synagogue was burnt in Rome, while in Antioch the Jewish community was under attack from the Meletian Church through John Chrysostom's homilies Against the Jews. These acts of violence occurred between 386 and 388, at the time of the conflict between Theodosius and the usurper Maximus, both of them from Nicene, or just after this conflict, in a context of Nicene build-up and heightened Christian intolerance. The confiscation of the «Maccabean synagogue« in Antioch took place probably between 388 and 390-391. This anti-Jewish violence that the emperors didn't want started in cities where the Jewish communities were powerful and influential, and probably seen as rival by the Church authorities, and especially in the cities where the hegemonic local Church aimed to assert its authority, after a schism or in order to hasten the end of a schism, as it was the case in Rome and Antioch. However, in the 4th century and no more at the beginning of the 5th century, Christian anti-Jewish violence was not similar to persecution as it was sporadic in spite of the constant animosity of the Nicene Church authorities towards the Jews.En 388 après J.-C., la destruction de la synagogue de Callinicon, une place forte romaine d’Osrhoène, sur la rive gauche de l’Euphrate, ne fut pas un fait isolé. Dans le même temps, une autre synagogue fut brûlée à Rome, tandis que, à Antioche, l’Église mélécienne s’en prenait à la communauté juive, par le biais des homélies Contre les Juifs de Jean Chrysostome. Ces violences se déroulèrent, entre 386 et 388, au temps du conflit entre Théodose et l'usurpateur Maxime, tous deux nicéens, ou dans les suites immédiates de ce conflit, dans un contexte de surenchère nicéenne et d'exclusivisme chretién exacerbé. La confiscation, à Antioche, de la " synagogue des Maccabées " eut probablement lieu dans un laps de temps compris entre l’année 388 et la période 390-391. Cette violence antijuive dont ne voulaient pas les empereurs se déclencha dans des cités où les Juifs représentaient des communautés puissantes et influentes, sans doute perçues comme concurrentes par les autorités ecclésiastiques et, surtout, dans des cités où il s’agissait pour l'Église locale hégémonique d'affirmer son autorité, au sortir d'un schisme ou afin d'en hâter la sortie, comme ce fut le cas à Rome et à Antioche. Cependant, la violence chrétienne antijuive ne s’apparenta pas, au IVe siècle, et pas davantage au début du Ve siècle, à une persécution; elle fut ponctuelle même si l’animosité des autorités ecclésiastiques nicéennes à l’égard des Juifs fut constante
