Biljke i biljni derivati potencijalni su izvori biološki aktivnih spojeva koji su sposobni ometati kancerogene procese. Ovoj skupini pripadaju i biljke roda Allium, bogate polifenolima i organosumpornim spojevima s antioksidativnim i antikancerogenim djelovanjem. Cilj rada bio je ispitati utjecaj metanolnih ekstrakata Allium × cornutum i A. cepa na preživljavanje tumorskih HeLa stanica. Stanice su tretirane ekstraktima (koncentracije 100 µg/ml) nakon čega im je određena vijabilnost, te provjerena morfologija i cjelovitost DNA molekule. Oba ekstrakta pokazala su inhibitorni učinak na rast i proliferaciju HeLa stanica. Uočena je promjena morfologije stanica, te fragmentacija DNA molekule nastale kao posljedica apoptoze.
