Courland archaeologist Carl Boy, graduate of Tartu University and senior teacher at Jelgava Grammar School. He conducted his first excavation at Dobele castle in 1883, soon after graduation. More widely known in the historiography is his 1895 excavation at the Semigallian cemetery of Ciemalde. He was also involved in ascertaining the place of discovery of certain valuable artefact hoards (the Auri silver bar hoard, the 13th-century anvil hoard of from Pļaviņas station, the Kalviškiai hoard of bronze axes, etc.). Boy was an active member of the Courland Society for Literature and Art and the Courland Provincial Museum, and had a wide range of interests.
