Manganese (Mn) oxide minerals occur in a wide variety of geological settings. Besides being major components of Mn nodules that pave huge areas of the ocean floor, Mn oxide minerals are ubiquitous in soils and sediments and participate in a variety of chemical reactions affecting groundwater and bulk soil composition. Todorokite [(Ca,Na,K)X(Mn4+,Mn3+)6O12·3.5H2O] is one of the major Mn minerals identified in ocean Mn nodules, but it is also a major mineral in the oxidized zones of many terrestrial Mn deposits.
