Using the Buzzy: A Decrease in Pain During Needlestick Procedures with Pediatric Patients

Pain during needlestick procedures cause difficulties for the pediatric patient, the parents, and the nursing staff. Each day, individuals are looking at how pain can be blocked through different methods so that the procedures are less traumatic. Needlestick procedures can cause children increased levels of anxiety that can impact them far beyond just one visit. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Buzzy during needlestick procedures. Evidence found that when using this product for twenty seconds prior to the procedure significantly lessens the patient’s pain. The Buzzy is latex free, reusable, and can be sanitized between each use. This product can be used in practice prior to injections, blood draws, or intravenous access. In the shape of a bumble bee, this device successfully decreases pain in pediatric patients ranging in age from four years to eighteen years old. Studies have shown that the use of the Buzzy can decrease pain amongst pediatric pain in addition to decreasing anxiety throughout procedures as well. The Buzzy is a cost effective and practical way to decrease pain in the pediatric population
