Abstract

Cabrerite, (Ni₂.₂ Mg₀.₇ Fe₀.₁)(AsO₄)₂ • 8 H₂O, from Laurium (Greece), crystallizes in space group C2/m, with a = 10.211(6), b = 13.335(3), c = 4.728(3) Å, β = 104.97°, Z = 2. The crystal structure of cabrerite had been refined starting from the parameters of vivianite. Anisotropic least squares refinement (R = 0.046), including cation occupancies, indicated significant ordering of Ni 8 Mg in the octahedral sites : M(1) = 0.976 Ni + 0.024 Mg ; M(2) = 1.392 Ni + 0.608 Mg. Single octahedra, M(1), and double octahedral groups, M(2)… M(2), are connected by AsO₄ tetrahedra to form complex sheets parallel to (010). These sheets are held together only by hydrogen bonding, thus accounting for the perfect (010) cleavage of the mineral.La cabrérite, (...
