Mare britannicum : a name for the Atlantic maritime space. From the first century AD onwards, some Greek and Latin authors (Pomponius Mela, Pliny, Ptolemy) mention in their writings the British sea or the British ocean. This name lasted throughout the Middle Ages until the early XIIIth century at least, when it is found in Anglo-Norman and German chronicles. On the basis of a corpus that is not exhaustive but sufficiently supplied to enable the analysis, we propose to highlight the geographical areas defined by these terms, their evolution over time and the type of sources where they appear.
