In the social context of Antiquity, especially in communities, the shared meal was crucial for the cohesion of society and of groups. This was the case with the Christians. According to Tertullian, «Our meal displays the reason for its name – we call it by a name which means ‘ love’ in Greek » . This name (agapè) is frequently used by the New Testament writers to refer to love of neighbour and love of God. Its use to refer to a meal is first found in Jude 12 and became normative following this. When it began to be distinguished from the eucharist, the agapè steadily fell into disuse.
