Homework and academic performance in the 3rd and 4th grade mathematical discipline

This research, with ethnographic characteristics, aimed to show the relationship between homework and excellent, good / very good and poor academic achievement in mathematics, using direct observation in the classroom and interview, as data collection methods. The observed sample consisted of 102 students and three teachers from four classrooms, one from the third and three from the fourth grade of elementary school randomly chosen by lot. The semi-structured interview was conducted with 22 students from this sample, their math teachers, their parents and the principal of the school of the Federal School of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The data obtained showed that the student considered excellent by the teacher, as well as the one classified as good and very good, often performs more complete homework than the student considered as weak. It was also evidenced the relevance of the actions of the teachers when the task was requested and corrected, and of the parents, during the performance of the same. Likewise, the time spent on TV can influence the student's academic performance. . The analysis of the teacher's previous and consequent actions of the homework indicated the importance that the teacher gives to this activity as parents and students recognize, in turn, the importance of the homework, although the latter do not like it very much. to do it, especially in large quantities. Parental action was also analyzed in terms of how they monitor their child, including the arrangement of the home environment, control of television and other hours, and it appears that one can conclude. that they still need more information about how to help their children with their schoolwork, so that they can contribute to their better results in their academic performance. The author hopes that the information collected will be useful to all those who in one way or another are directly or indirectly involved with homework, as it seems to be extremely useful for student learning, if well worked at school, at home and by the student himself.Dissertação (Mestrado)Esta pesquisa, com características etnográficas, teve por objetivo mostrar a relação entre a realização da tarefa de casa e o rendimento acadêmico do aluno excelente, bom/muito bom e fraco na disciplina Matemática, utilizando a observação direta em sala de aula e a entrevista, como métodos de coleta de dados. A amostra observada era composta de 102 alunos e três professoras de quatro salas, sendo uma de terceira e três de quarta série do ensino fundamental escolhidas aleatoriamente por meio de sorteio. A entrevista semi-estruturada foi realizada com 22 alunos, retirados dessa amostra, suas professoras de Matemática, seus pais e a diretora da escola da Rede Federal de Ensino da cidade de Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Os dados obtidos evidenciaram que o aluno considerado excelente pela professora, bem como aquele classificado como bom e muito bom freqüentemente realiza mais tarefas de casa completas do que o aluno considerado como fraco. Ficou evidenciada, também, a relevância das ações das professoras quando do momento da solicitação e correção da tarefa, e dos pais, durante a realização da mesma De igual forma, que o tempo que se dispensa frente à tevê pode influenciar no rendimento acadêmico do aluno. A análise das ações da professora antecedentes e conseqüentes à lição de casa indicaram a importância que a professora confere a essa atividade assim como os pais e os alunos reconhecem, por sua vez, a importância da tarefa de casa, apesar de os últimos não gostarem muito de realizá-la, principalmente em grande quantidade. A ação dos pais também foi analisada, em termos de como fazem o acompanhamento escolar do filho, incluindo-se aí o arranjo do ambiente do lar controle dos horários de ver televisão e outros, parecendo que se pode concluirxxi que os mesmos ainda necessitam de maiores informações a respeito de como ajudar seus filhos nos afazeres escolares, para que assim possam contribuir para os mesmos obterem melhores resultados no seu desempenho acadêmico. A autora espera que as informações coletadas sejam proveitosas a todos aqueles que de uma forma ou de outra estão envolvidos direta ou indiretamente com a tarefa de casa, uma vez que a mesma parece ser extremamente útil ao aprendizado do aluno, se bem trabalhada na escola, no lar e pelo próprio aluno
