We present two novel optical detection techniques for radio over fiber (RoF) communication links. Firstly, we present recent results obtained with optical digital coherent detection of optical phase-modulated ROF signals supporting error-free transmission over 25 km standard SMF with BPSK and QPSK encoded data at bit rates of 50 Msymbol/s. We also present an alternative scheme, which implements all-optical frequency down-conversion of a RoF signal while simultaneously supporting baseband OOK transmissions
