At a time when the art of the individual portrait was being largely developed, the representation of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I on canvas during the English Renaissance was determinant in the construction of the Tudor myth. Within a context full of dynastic adversities since the very beginning – and beyond the fact that the portraits of the queen are far more abundant than her father’s – the iconography of the two monarchs constitutes an elaborate form of writing through images, a metonymic narrative displaying their power, sovereignty and supremacy.
