Background: An established neurobiological model of negatively biased emotion processing in depression is the limbic-cortical imbalance model: limbic and ventral-prefrontal regions, including the amygdala, detecting threat and initiating automatic responses, are hyper-activated, while dorsal-cortical regions, controlling voluntary behavior, are hypo-activated; In addition, the functional connectivity (FC) of limbic areas with ventral prefrontal regions is increased, while it is decreased with dorsal-cortical regions.
