Les traductions anglaises de la fin du Moyen Âge

International audienceIn the 14th and 15th centuries, a large movement of translations of texts in English appeared in many fields of the knowledge and of the literature: Bible, devotional works, chronicles, romances, didactic, medical and scientific works. This paper aims to analyse the main characteristics of this movement. The first point is the important number of translations from French - Latin was not the only mediatory language. Second, their patrons were first and foremost aristocracts, members of the nobility or of the gentry, men and women. It is only with Henry V and his brother Humphrey of Gloucester, from the 1410-1420s that a sketch of princely politics appears, not really followed in the later decades, marked by the political troubles and civil wars. Finally, we must highlight the difficulties linked to the first integral translation of the Bible by the Lollards at the end of the 14th century.Aux XIVe et XVe siècles, un vaste mouvement de traductions de textes en anglais s’est développé dans de nombreux domaines de la connaissance et de la littérature : Bible, littérature dévotionnelle, chroniques, romans, textes didactiques, médicaux et scientifiques. Cet article se propose d’analyser les principales caractéristiques de ce mouvement. Un premier point est le nombre important de traductions effectuées à partir du français – le latin n’était pas la seule langue médiatrice. En second lieu, les commanditaires de ces traductions ont avant tout été des membres de la noblesse et de la gentry, hommes ou femmes. Ce n’est qu’avec Henri V de Lancastre et son frère Humphrey de Gloucester, à partir des années 1410-1420, qu’une esquisse de politique princière apparaît en la matière, qui n’est toutefois pas vraiment dans les décennies suivantes, marquées par les troubles politiques et les guerres civiles. Enfin, il faut souligner les difficultés posées aux auteurs qui écrivaient en anglais du fait de la première traduction intégrale de la Bible par les lollards
