In this thesis, a methodology to accurately estimate the state of charge (SOC ) of the batteries used in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) is proposed. A linear relationship exists between open circuit voltage (VOC ) and SOC . In the proposed scheme, a system theory approach is employed to identify the open circuit voltage of the battery, from which the state of charge of the battery is determined. This method is very unique because it estimates the VOC of the battery in the vehicle even under load conditions. A state variable approach yields a set of non-linear time varying equations that describe the dynamics of the battery. This non-linear time varying system is reduced to a linear time varying system by making certain reasonable assumption...
